Ille du Nord...North Island. Its majestic rounded profile beckons from Beau Vallon Beach on the Island of Mahé. Three granitic mountains dominate the island - Grand Paloss to the north, Bernica to the southwest and Conglement to the southeast. These outcrops drop directly into the sea, bordered by giant boulders and between them lie three areas of flat coastal plain or Island plateaux. In the middle of the island there are two freshwater lakes and it boasts four beaches sheltered from the prevailing winds.
The island was uninhabited till 1784 when the first ship was wrecked there. Thus started the process of evolution which has made the island what it is today. Originally the island had many aromatic plants, spices and fruits growing there but for business and trade purposes coconut was planted en-masse and domestic animals were brought in. The Noah's Ark project endeavours to restore the ecological balance of the island to its earlier glory.
